It has come to my attention that the game update on 11/30/2010 patch 1.18 is flawed. There is a problem with the mood meter that makes it very difficult to keep your Sim's mood at a reasonable level. Not much is known about this, except it seems to be affecting most people regardless of the neighborhood, EPs, or number of Sims in the family. Sometimes the issue is resolved by restarting the game, however this does not always work.
As of right now the best course of action is to backup and reinstall The Sims 3, then patch and run 1.17 until the issue is fixed by EA.
